Combating ISIS With Drones

drones in ukraine

The United States and Russia want more modern aircraft. But Ukraine does not have the necessary resources to train their soldiers in these types of aircraft. While Ukrainians are able to receive training on aircraft and other vehicles in Western nations like Germany, they can't get the same training for drones in Ukraine. Ukrainians are accustomed to older equipment like trucks so drones make it easier to use. Drones are easy to use by soldiers, as they do not require pilots. Drones have a similar interface to video games, making them easy to use.

Aerorozvidka

The Ukrainian military uses a unique approach to combating ISIS in eastern Ukraine: octocopters equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime missions. Some drones can even light up columns and are equipped with anti-tank weapons. These drones can transport up to 11 pounds of payload. They are maneuverable. The drones' small size means they can fly low over targets and drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began as an IT enthusiast group. It has since evolved into a military air reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka began as a civilian drone company. However, the organization grew to become a fully fledged unit with its own head. Because of export controls, the Ukrainian government barred Russian military aircraft from entering the country. Since many of the components of the drones are manufactured in the US, Aerorozvidka relies on donations and crowdfunding to help keep the company going.

Switchblade

The U.S. military has supplied Ukraine with armed "Switchblade," drones capable of striking Russian tanks from faraway. These unmanned aerial vehicles were designed by the US Air Force as a response to Ukrainian demands. According to a Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby, more than 121 of these machines are being dispatched to Ukraine. There is not yet any information about how the Switchblades are used in the conflict with Ukraine.

The Switchblade drone is small and easy to launch from a tube. It has a range 40 km. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. These small aircraft are easy to set up during conflicts like the Ukraine. The Switchblade can fly much faster than the Bayraktar (current U.S. ally).

Russian kamikaze drones

The US recently announced a military aid package worth $800 million to Ukraine. The delivery of 121 unmanned aircraft called "Phoenix Ghosts", which is intended to terrorize Russian forces, is part of the package. These aircraft are designed for flying over areas for up to thirty to forty minutes and come equipped with warheads, cameras, and other equipment. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These small, lightweight aircrafts are equipped with a powerful, low-flying gimbal, allowing them to operate from air, land, or sea. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability will prove to be critical for Ukraine's defense, since it can break Russian sieges as well as attack command-and-control centers. Even though such capabilities would pose a serious risk to both sides, Ukraine could win if it can use small drones to make a difference in battle.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia has started integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions to its military arsenal. These drones can be used in the same way as bazookas to carry out lethal loitering operations. The use of loitering drones may lead to the proliferation of these autonomous killing machines in black markets. However, observers and pundits worry about this. So what can the U.S. Do to prevent this?

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone can hover in a given area for between 30 and 40 minutes. It weighs in at 5.5 pounds. It has a camera and small warhead. Its mission is to eliminate the opposition forces within Ukraine.
